Star Rating

First of all we should thanks director for bring this controversial and protestant character to movie. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has played the role of Saadat Hasan Manto. Manto spent his childhood in India but after partition he had to flee to Pakistan. But he never accepted this partition and its dirty consequence. In one scene we find Monto and his friend Shyam celebrating their friendship with brandy for the last time because Manto is leaving for Karachi forever. Both of them are sanding at port to say good bye each other.  We can see Hindu Shyam saying to Manto “Pakistan Zindabad” and Pakistani Manto saying in reply “Bharat Zindabad”. This is also a good message for today's world.

We can find one word “Hiptalla” many times in this movie. This word is the main attraction of this movie. Also this word is the strong point and weak point of this movie. This word has a long story, that’s why it would be easier to understand for those who have read the books of Manto. But others may face little difficulty to understand the matter. Not only this word, but also many scenes are there which are easier to understand for regular reader of Manto. But whatever it is, you definitely enjoy the most controversial Urdu writer’s character in this movie.

Main attraction of this movie is Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his outstanding performance. His specky look nicely describes the pain of heart breaking. Nawazuddin has nicely presented his character – Manto, the person who was accused for indecent activity six times, the person who never accepts partition and ultimately ends his life in alcoholic. Though, his death is not shown in this movie because character like Manto is immortal.

Other character like Manto’s wife Safiyah is also an important role and Rasika Dugal also has done well in this part. Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal also have good work in their short scope. Some time we find some random scenes which are relevant to Manto’s writing. That time it would be a great enjoyment if you already know those Manto’s writings otherwise you may face little discomfort to get meaning. Apart from these little flaws overall movie is good and enjoyable.
